HOW WE TEACH FRENCH LANGUAGE
Our 8 effective habits as successful French language tutors in Singapore
1. We get students to participate willingly and actively.
  • Empathy: We genuinely empathize and build good rapport with students. We try to win over their trust in us as their French tutors and facilitators to obtain their willing participation in the learning process.
  • Goal-setting: We get students to commit to certain goals that we set and achieve together within a timeframe. We constantly remind them how near or how far they are from achieving our set objectives.
  • Know-how: We train students to understand key linguistic concepts (applicable to all languages) and not simply memorize French vocabulary lists and grammar notes. Students learn to make informed guesses about how French language works, they progress from 'knowing that' to 'knowing how'.
  • Ongoing support: We share the student's burden of getting through schoolwork, projects, continuous assessments and exams. This helps lessen the student's anxiety as they know we will be constantly at their side in the preparation process.
  • We train students to understand key linguistic concepts, not simply memorize French vocabulary lists and grammar notes. Students learn to make informed guesses about how French language works, they progress from 'knowing that' to 'knowing how'.
2. We leverage on our student's English skills to learn French language.
  • If you know English, you already know 30% French!
We make maximum use of our student's knowledge of English to learn French language. If you know English, you already know 30% French!

Students with prior knowledge of a European language (such as English, Italian or Spanish) progress much faster when learning French compared to those who do not know a European language.
  • If you know English, you already know 30% French! Therefore, English speakers can learn French faster by building on what they already know.
  • Don't let your knowledge of English go wasted.
We find it a waste of useful resources to use only French in a class of complete beginners who are good in English, as is the case in Singapore.

This approach of using no other language but French in class (called the Direct Method) works very well in an immersion context.

In French immersion courses conducted in France, the students come from all over the world, they do not share a common language, and they live in a French-speaking community.

However, in the context of Singapore, we find it inappropriate and counter-productive to use the Direct Method to teach French language.
  • Talking only French to beginners: Killing me Softly.
From experience, we find using only French in a class of complete beginners can create a feeling of isolation. Especially among students who are not in their comfort zone when it comes to learning languages.

We find it more effective to gradually cut down on English as students progress from intermediate to advanced level in French.
  • It's easier to relate to a bilingual teacher.
Many of our Singaporean students tell us they find it easier to relate to 'a tutor who speaks their language'.

A tutor who is functionally bilingual in both French and English can understand how students think and can better help them learn from their mistakes when they translate ideas literally from English to French.

3. We use the best French learning materials available in the market.
  • Huge collection of learning materials from various sources.
We've spent 12 years and a lot of money to assemble a library of the best French language learning materials from various countries. We especially prefer to use innovative materials created in Europe, America and Canada that cater specifically to English-speaking learners.
  • The French Connection: Online teacher groups.
Through constant internet research and communication with online teacher groups, we keep ourself knowledgeable and up-to-date on more creative and interesting ways of teaching specific topics.
  • Variety is the spice of life: Storybooks, Movies, Comics.
We make our class fun by using a variety of materials such as: videos, cartoons, jokes, and story books dealing with popular themes in compositions (adventure, tragedy, misfortune, accidents, etc).
  • By interacting with other teachers teaching French as a Foreign Language (Francais Langue Etrangere), we keep ourselves knowledgeable and up-to-date on more creative and interesting ways of teaching specific topics.
4. We share with best practices for learning a foreign language.
  • We teach students how to learn.
As tutors, we see ourselves not just a dispenser of knowledge but also as a facilitator. This involves teaching students how to learn.
  • Doing well in exams is a matter of strategy.
We've prepared hundreds of students for exams, and we firmly believe that succeeding and doing well in exams is a matter of strategy. We usually share the following strategies with our students:

How to create an indexing system for fast and easy reference
How to organize vocabulary according to themes
How to save sentences and expressions that can be used for compositions
How to organize grammatical points that often come out in cloze passages
How to memorize effectively using memorization techniques
How to edit one's work to include elements that score high with examiners
How to improve their listening skills
How to make informed guesses when they are not sure

  • As tutors, we see ourselves not just a dispenser of knowledge but also as a facilitator. This involves teaching students how to learn.
5. We ensure that students make measurable progress after each lesson.
  • Using factual information intelligently: Our French classes are more result-oriented than information-based. We see no point in giving students an exhaustive list of facts without showing them how to use them intelligently to score well in their French exams.
  • Working out past examination papers: During our classes, we constantly refer to past examination papers so that students can see the relevance of every topic that we teach. This strategy also gets students to be familiar with examination questions so that they are never taken by surprise by examiners.
  • We get our students to be familiar with examination questions so that they are never taken by surprise by examiners.
6. We come to class well-organized and well-prepared.
  • Student must get value for money: We put in a lot of effort into our French lessons since we believe that students must get value for every dollar that they spend on tuition. Private tutoring is a huge responsibility and we believe in giving the best to the students.
  • We like it well-done, never medium-rare:We are uncompromising on quality and high standards. We are allergic to anything approximate and half-baked. We can predict students' grades before the final exams.
  • We can predict students' grades before the final exams.
7. We create a comfortable and safe learning atmosphere for the student.
  • Learn through mistakes without feeling embarrassed.
We create a friendly environment such that students feel safe to try, to take risks, to make mistakes without fear of feeling embarrassed or stupid.
  • We communicate a sense of optimism even to the weakest students.
We communicate a sense of optimism in learning so that even the weakest students never feel left out.Whenever we identify students who are beginning to sink, we look for something we can praise and show them how much they have learned.

Instead of just giving a low mark, we explain to the students in concrete terms what they could do to improve it next time. Our teaching philosophy: There are no bad students, only bad teachers.
  • Our teaching philosophy: There are no bad students, only bad teachers.
8. We encourage feedback from students to improve our French lessons.
  • Active listening: We always try to find out if students think they need more practice, if they have suggestions of their own, if they find any lesson easy or difficult, boring or interesting. And we adjust accordingly.
  • We listen actively and adjust when necessary.
Students sometimes know better than the teacher.
